As of 2020, according to data released by the Malaysian Investment Developmental Authority (MIDA), China is Malaysia’s seventh largest investor in terms of implementing projects and this has created more than 48,000 job opportunities in Malaysia. It is the biggest FDI investor in the manufacturing sector for five consecutive years. Chinese investments are entrenched in Malaysia for more than three decades stemming from the formalisation of modern diplomatic relations between the countries since 1974.

Under the Belt & Road Initiative (BRI), Malaysia has frequently been recognised by China as a vital component and infrastructure & logistics partner in the Southeast Asian region.
